When you share information with us, we may use that information to provide our services. We want you to know what information we collect and how we use it.
What we collect
We collect information to provide a service to our users. Some of that information is provided from you explicitly, and some if it is collected implicitly as you use the service.
Information you give us
When you initiate usage of our app, or login to our website using your Google account, we have access to some specific information from your Google profile including: full name, email address and profile picture.
When your use our mobile app, we collect necessary information to identify your device to other users when necessary as we are a gateway to help you access their services. In particular, we collect your device MAC address. However, whenever possible, this information is obscured with a one-way hash function on your device, preserving the uniqueness while destroying the original information.
When you connect to a shared wifi hotspot, we also collect your device's IP address and record when the connection occurred. Here again, to provide this information to the owner of the hotspot. We make sure these identifying details are only available to the hotspot owner by encrypting the data with the hotspot owner's public key.
We also collect server log information whenever your or your device accesses our servers. This usually amounts to only your device's public IP address (such as that of the wifi hotspot you are connected).
We access your device's local storage to persist and access your account's security certificate (private key) on your behalf. For security reasons, this certificate is never stored on our servers and must be used exclusively on your device.
Information you share
Our service lets you share information with others, especially potentially sensitive password information. You should use caution when you share information and only share sensitive information with those that you trust.
This application is specifically designed to encrypt shared passwords such that only those with the recipient's private key can decrypt the passwords. You only need to rely on those your share with to keep your passwords secure, as our servers cannot decrypt your passwords.
Information we share
We do not currently share any of your information with anyone or any 3rd party other than when explicitly requested by you and your usage of your services.
We will share personal information with companies, organizations or individuals outside of Hello Wifi if we have a good-faith belief that access, use, preservation or disclosure of the information is reasonably necessary to:
- meet any applicable law, regulation, legal process or enforceable governmental request.
- enforce applicable Terms of Service, including investigation of potential violations.
- detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, security or technical issues.
- protect against harm to the rights, property or safety of Hello Wifi, our users or the public as required or permitted by law.
We work hard to protect Hello Wifi and our users from unauthorized access to or unauthorized alteration, disclosure or destruction of information we hold. In particular:
- We encrypt many of our services using SSL.
